C-10 (Cooktown-Ten) and 4G group training
Violence prevention training is a must for anybody in a paid or voluntary role who has regular, trusted contact with individuals, families or communities, and can or is required to, contribute to violence prevention through that everyday contact.
This includes people in frontline government and council roles, First Nations people, teachers, childcare, doctors, health and wellbeing practitioners, community, sports and recreation, migrant and settlement support, and many more.
The C-10 is an early-intervention tool that equips people to recognise a trajectory towards violence in an everyday encounter and to change it. This can be described as anticipatory prevention.
Our training builds confidence, and confidence builds use. Trainees report:
-
more confidence in having difficult/uncomfortable conversations
-
better relationships with service users, families and young people
-
more deliberate communication, and
-
confidence to adapt their new knowledge for different situations, settings and user groups.
Training doesn’t replace an organisation’s own referral and safeguarding procedures.
Pre/post training surveys show up to 94% participants report improved knowledge and 96% a clearer understanding of prevention.
Our training is delivered by VPA’s experts in violence prevention. We stay available after training to help your people build confidence in having safe conversations about violence.
Are you a
➝ Government department and councils
➝ Service and community-based agency
➝ Health and wellbeing clinic, AMS or primary care service
➝ Veteran wellbeing agency

Practical, evidence-informed training that helps your staff and community understand how violence develops and how to interrupt it early.

What is the C-10?
The C-10 (Cooktown-Ten) is a violence prevention framework that maps six contributing factors (frustration, desperation, isolation, prejudice, place and trigger) and shows how they build towards a threshold where violence becomes more likely. It also maps their corresponding prevention actions and the positive life processes that keep people well. Participants learn to recognise these factors in their workplace and community, and to step in before they escalate.
The 4Gs: Gentle Hands, Gentle Eyes, Gentle Breath, Gentle Response
The 4Gs is a simple mindfulness practice that slows the heart rate and creates a pause before reacting. It can be learnt in minutes and taught to children, young people and adults. Many participants tell us it is the part they use first.
Trialled nationally
The C-10 has been trialled across Australia in metropolitan, rural and remote communities, First Nations community-controlled health services, migrant and refugee-services, professional associations and councils.
"It gave me the language to explain why it is wrong and the theory to stop it happening."
"I actually use it a lot because I think it helps me to make sense of a lot of aspects of somebody's difficult situation."
